Sunday Mornings

PRESCHOOL-5TH GRADE SUNDAY CLASS

SOV's Preschool-5th Grade class meets from 10 to 10:45am on Sundays downstairs. The Deep Blue Kids curriculum is used. This resource incorporates adventure, exciting stories, science experiments, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a living-faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today! We meet as one group with a welcome, offering (prayer or pennies), opening activity and then split into groups by age for more Bible activities. These activities are tailored to each session throughout the year.

"With Deep Blue, children will make Bible stories, Bible people, and Bible passages a part of their lives. They will also come to know the Bible as THEIR book and find ways to let the Bible speak to them today! Deep Blue incorporates Bible stories, science activities, arts and crafts, animated video storytelling, and active games into a lived-faith experience that will help children discover what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ today!"

MIDDLE SCHOOLERS SUNDAY CLASS

SOV's 6th-8th Grade class meets Sundays from 10-10:45am upstairs in the Church and focuses on Bible study and how it relates to each one of us personally in the modern day. Our course materials covers a two year cycle and is "Echo: The Story" by Spark House publishing. Year one introduces many classical stories from the Old Testament. Progressing through time, the second year we reach the New Testament learning about the many acts of Jesus. Our final module reviews examples of Jesus' parables, the Lord's Prayer and the true meaning of the Kingdom of God, Jesus' encounters with unbelievers and sinners, a growing threat to Jesus from religious leaders, the Last Supper and Jesus' resurrection.

To help mental retention, we start class with a 5 minute video which reviews the previous week's discussion. A new topic is introduced by asking the students to ponder and share answers related to a modern day situation or question. After the bible reading, discussion topics attempt to frame the meaning of the 2,000 year old bible story into today's world, inviting the class to interpret how Jesus and others were feeling at the time of the story as well as applying it to their own lives. By implementing this teaching approach, our intent is to demonstrate the current day meaning and value the Bible has on our lives, rather than the Bible seeming to exist as an outdated historical text. Our hope and challenge is that this approach will encourage the students to begin to adopt a solid belief foundation in Christ of their own free will that will last a lifetime.
