"For thus said the Lord God, … In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength."  Isaiah 30:15

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent.  There is the tradition of giving up something for the season, or possibly adding something to what we do.  The idea being to hep us focus on the gift of the Christ.  That can work well, or it might leave us feeling worse than we started if we over reach and then fall short.

Maybe this is the same territory, but I was touched by an article in the February Lutheran magazine by Cheri Mueller.  Her suggestion was to follow those words from Isaiah, to take time to rest.  In the article she quotes Mother Teresa, "The work will always be there, but if we do not rest and pray we will not have the presence to do our work."

Turning as well to Jesus words from Matthew 11:28, "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest." It is not about a race or an accomplishment, but about simple rest.  May we be able to do that very thing, and be strengthened for the journey as a result.

May we trust in you Lord,
Pastor Randy

"Merciful Savior, we confess to you and to one another that we fall short of being all that you created us to be.  Forgive us Lord.  Grant us the desire and the faith to let go, putting all our days, past, present and future in your safe and capable hands.  For the sake of Christ our Lord. Amen."

The Role of Connections:
We Get By With a Little Help from Our Friends

It does seem to be harder to form close friendships as we age.  For one thing, it’s scary.  We may have already lost some of our dear friends and it’s hard to think about the certainty of losing others, either through their deaths or ours.   But do begin again.  It’s like a snowball.  Each new connection you make will be someone who can help connect you further with their friends and interests.  And you will be blessed.
